All-Ceramic Bonded Posterior Restorations

Implementing Design and Fabrication Concepts to Obtain

Maximum Aesthetics and Longevity

Combining natural-looking occlusal anatomy and right function continues to be an issue that some dentists and dental ceramists still have to deal with. Some state that posterior restorations “in the back of the mouth where nobody will discover them”, and also this has grown to be their rationale in determining the amount of functional and esthetic quality of these restorations.

We, at Impressive Dental Studio, feel that posterior restorations present an opportunity to exercise not only control and magnificence in function, but artistic mastering of form and color. The predictability of indirect posterior all-ceramic bonded restorations has been questioned almost since the beginning of their utilization in restorative dentistry. However, the preparation design to properly deliver these types of restorations continues to be sometimes misinterpreted. Within the laboratory industry, some technicians lack knowledge of the sound principles of dental anatomy, occlusion and experience of working with posterior all-ceramic bonded restorations. Coupled with high production quotas, it is often led to higher failure rates of functionally and esthetically compromised restorations and that have made dentists and dental technicians to count on materials and other methods to atone for the deficiencies on both sides.

Relatively newer materials, for instance pure lithium disilicate, seem to provide a promising future of those varieties of restoration. Yet, questions still remain whether their success hinges on the strength of the material alone or when it also is dependent upon additional circumstances, including preparation design, bonding technique, and occlusal forced management. Are these factors less important mainly because there happens to be a material which allows dental technicians to depend on its relative strength alone?

If the goal will be to recover dentition fully to the extent of its definition, you would have it logical that sufficient esthetics for that posterior region must be part of the end result. Further in this article, we will explore preparation design theory and principles and the corresponding fabrication way of layered all-ceramic bonded posterior restorations.
